Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Modern Coptic icon of the Theotokos

Designating the Blessed Virgin Mary Theotokos, meanining literally God-bearer, was the work of the Council of Ephesus held in AD 431. Even prior to this Ecumenical Council, Theotokos had already been in use for a long time in the devotional and liturgical life of the Church. The theological significance of this title is to emphasize that Mary's son, Jesus, is fully God, as well as fully human, and that Jesus' two natures (divine and human) were united in a single Person of the Trinity.

Holy Mary, Theotokos, pray for us as we enter this New Year.

Veni adoramus
